Scholarships are at the root of our purpose in Automotive Women’s Alliance Foundation (AWAF). As an active professional foundation
dedicated to supporting the advancement of automotive professionals, AWAF strives to motivate current and future students
studying an automotive related field.
Scholarships are selected by the Scholarship Committee and awarded quarterly to the women that solicit passion and
drive for the automotive industry. It is our hope that with these scholarships, we can lessen the burden on students
and allow them to focus on gaining knowledge and development in automotive related fields and thus enhance their potential
career path and the future of the industry.

Amy Allison,
May 18, 2012, $2,500
Amy is a freshman at Kettering University, Flint, Michigan studying mechanical engineering. Her love for engineering started in high school at Clarkston Science and Math Technology Academy and Brandon High School. Amy discovered her passion after participating in the LITE (Lives Improved Through Engineering) at Kettering. As a college freshman, Amy joined the Society of Women Engineer’s, Engineer’s Without Borders, and was pledged to the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and made the Dean’s list. Her working internship is an ongoing rotation between school and employment with IAV Automotive Engineering in Northville, Michigan where she applies education to the real world of engineering. Her employer writes, “Amy is consistently one of the first people in the group to start diving into a problem to help provide a solution.” “She always shows great initiative, diligence and able to develop intelligent plans and implement them successfully.” Amy currently serves as president of Kettering University Model United Nation’s Club and is an active member of the Fifth Quarter Leadership Group at her church. Amy says she has always sought to inspire younger women to realize their potential and reach their goals, even as a minority in the Automotive Engineering industry. Amy hails from Ortonville, Michigan.

Amy Kao,

Amy, in her senior year, will graduate from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, May, 2012 with a business administration degree in general management. Her career aspiration is to work in the automotive business because of the reputation for excellence, global presence and commitment to make a difference. She interned at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and it confirmed for her, the creative culture and content of work were a fit for her passion to directly impact and help customers, problem solve, and commitment to a make a difference both inside and outside of the office. Amy extends her educational and work ethics to include the social improvements for the people in her community. Her proudest accomplishment was helping low-income and minority students at the university attain their educational goals by actively working within the school system to successfully enact policy changes. As an accomplished pianist, she organized and hosted a Relay for Life Benefit Concert and raised $41,000 for the American Cancer Society. She also traveled to Shanghai, China to host and perform as a pianist in their International Grand Theater to benefit an orphanage in China. On a scholarship, Amy studied abroad at University of Oxford, Oxford, England, is the current president of Carnegie Mellon Business Association, attended Today’s National Entrepreneur Boot camp at Stanford University, tutors undergraduates in math , is fluent in Mandarin, and was crowned Miss Pennsylvania America Teen in 2009. As best written by her long-time music instructor, “I have watched Amy mature into an independent, creative, and selfless individual ready in every way to overcome obstacles in her path. AWAF also sees leadership potential for Amy and looks forward to helping her automotive aspirations turn into a career.

Nicole Findlay,

Scholarship Courtesy of Johnson Controls Inc. A junior at Kettering University, in Flint, Michigan, she is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and works on a co-op work/school rotation program. Nikki’s automotive exposure at BAE Systems in Texas included lab experience in occupational and crash worthiness, design reviews for human factors and ergonomic studies, and prototype build and verification. She also worked with test engineering, propulsion and chassis teams to complete the build of a prototype truck. She is involved in numerous school related activities and organizations including Kettering University Engineers Without Borders, Society of Women Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Kagle Leadership Initiatives, just to name a few. Nikki is passionate about engineering and recruiting more young women into the field. She takes these words to action and participates each summer in Smarter Girls Day Camp which gives young women a chance to learn about different careers and see exciting things in math, science and engineering. She is also a resident advisor for LITE students (Lives Improved Through Engineering) for Kettering University. Nikki’s home is San Angelo, Texas.

Nicole Kelsey,

Upon completing her sophomore year at Pima College in Arizona, Nicole will transfer to Karl Eller College of Management, University of Arizona and major in marketing and advertising. Her career goal is to design marketing materials, campaigns, eMarketing and internet ads for the auto industry and develop innovative ways to reach audiences and impact vehicle sales, products, and merchandizing. Nicole’s passion for cars blossomed when she purchased a used 2004 Mustang and started her hands-on customizing. She modified the chrome bumper inserts, added a cowl hood stripe, a Mach 1 Delete grille and Chin spoiler, chase taillights, and gloss back deck lid detail. Then she bought from Craig’s List a set of 17x8 chrome Mustang Bullitt rims and replaced her old tires with a new set of performance tires. To kick up the performance and horsepower, she installed a fender wall cold air intake and converted the stock pipe and bolted on a Flowmaster GT Catback to get a great tone and did more enhancements to improve her horsepower from 193 bhp to 245 bhp. She’s documented a year’s worth of retrofitting, learning’s and the mishaps all the way to the finish line. Nicole is active in the Collegiate DECA, an international association of students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship, and volunteers with fund raisers and as a judge at the high school level for DECA competitions. Nicole resides in Tucson, Arizona.

Kaitlyn Martin,
June 01, 2011, $2,500
Kaitlyn is the 2011 Valedictorian at Robert E Lee High School, Baytown, Texas. She will attend Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado to major in mechanical engineering with a concentration in robotics. Her interests began as a freshman, joining the FIRST robotics club. She quickly discovered the pathway to use her math and science aptitude toward a future in robotics and is determined to transform the auto industry and the art of driving through the science of robotics. Kaitlyn was involved in numerous school activities throughout her four years including; Student Body Vice President, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society President, chess team President, French club President, National Honor Society VP, robotics team President, Senior Student Activity Fund President, Chairman of the Academic Honesty committee, tennis varsity team captain, theatre, debate team, and many more. She has volunteered at numerous community functions such as creating digital book trailers to encourage children to read, providing helping hands with a local food bank, Red Cross, Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Shiners’ Undie Day, YMCA activities, and clean-up along waterways and parks. AWAF recognizes Kaitlyn as a rising star with great potential for any direction she takes in her future. Her continued motivation to excel in the academics, have fun and give back to the community will undoubtedly form her into a dynamic professional woman.

Ms. Alayna Thison,

Alayna is a junior at Oakland University, majoring in Human Resource Management. Early on, she had some experience in the health care industry in various administrative and functional assignments. However, when she began her internship for an automotive supplier it is where she started a connection to this industry; it was when her “check brake light” went on. She got to work and her co-workers used their company’s manufactured diagnostic tools and identified the problem and direction for the fix. This opened a door to her understanding of the magnitude of the auto industry and its’ career opportunities. Alayna lives in Clinton Township, MI and is a member of the Oakland Student Chapter of the Society of Human Resources Management, a volunteer at Church of Christ Center and was the captain of her high school varsity basketball team. AWAF is proud to add her to our esteemed group of scholarship recipients.

Ms. Shannon Corby,

Co-Sponsor Scholarship Courtesy of Comcast. Shannon is a junior at Northwood University, dual majoring in Automotive Marketing and Business Management. She has been a highly engaged student applying her education knowledge toward working on the 47th Northwood University International Auto Show as an executive board member, Domestic Chair for NUIAS 2010 and co-fundraising chair and was a former team member for the 45th and 46th auto shows. Shannon held internships at Chrysler and Ford dealerships, on the Dean’s list for six terms, involved with the emerging leaders program, Selling to Women Certification in 2009, and started the on-campus recycling project, “Go Green.” Shannon is from Plymouth, Michigan. AWAF admires her involvement and passion for the industry and looks forward to seeing her career aspirations come to fruition.

Ms. Samantha Medonia,

Scholarship Courtesy of Johnson Controls Inc. Samantha is a freshman at the University of Northwestern Ohio pursuing degrees in Performance Motorsports and Automotive Management. As a young lady she was inspired by women drag racers like Shirley Muldowney, Melanie Troxel, Hillary Will and rebuilt dragsters with her dad. Samantha’s goals include designing and building high quality engines, be a proprietor of her own business and to inspire other women to develop an interest for an automotive industry career. In high school, Samantha was a student member of the Career Technical Advisory Committee which gave her the opportunity to learn from the automotive leaders in her community. She was a member of National Honor Society, student council, the cross country and track teams, and competed in various junior drag racing events. Her community involvement includes volunteering at the local hospital and various charity organizations. Samantha’s home is in Hinckley, Ohio.

Ms. Tracey Older,

Scholarship Courtesy of Johnson Controls, Inc. Tracy enters her freshman year at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Tracy wants to be on the brink of new technology that will change the next generation of the automotive industry. She uncovered a new interest in the automotive world while working on a high school science project: CO2 emissions filtration system using lithium hydroxide and sodium zeolites. For the past three years, she has continued to study the engineering of a filtration system to emit clean exhaust. She has won numerous science fair awards, along with academic achievement awards. Her community involvement includes volunteering at a local hospital, participating in fund raiser events, and is the founder of the Junior High Science Fair Mentoring Program in her community. Tracy hails from Fort Madison, Iowa.

Mrs. Barbara Amberg,

Barbara is a graduate student at Eastern Michigan University and nearing her completion of a Master of Science degree in Quality Management. She has worked in quality functions for a major Tier 1 automotive supplier since the early 1990s. She wanted to pursue a higher education to learn the latest principles in Quality Management and to gain fresh skills to promote customer satisfaction through improved product, process quality and leadership. She recently extended her classroom experience to work with a non-profit private school by setting up a cost of quality system applying the COQ principles. She also served over eight years as a scout leader for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Barbara resides in Fenton, MI with her husband and four children.
